Mean Bao is a small and mighty family run company serving steamed buns (Chinese baos) and dim sum. The baos are freshly steamed with a pillowy texture, while dim sum is handmade and steamed to order. The concept was created in June 2013, with the first location located in a food court in OCAD University (Ontario College of Arts and Design). From the beginning, our vision was to bring our family favourites in a different format – capturing the millennial “foodie” spirit in our family’s younger generation, supported by wisdom of uncles who have extensive restaurant experience. A joint family effort supported steady expansion in the Toronto area as Mean Bao captured the attention of local blogs and press as well as local foodies on the likes of instagram and Facebook. A second location was opened the in the heart of Toronto’s trendy Queen West area in 2014 and a third location opened in Leslieville, an urban neighbourhood in Toronto known for its tight knit community and young professional families. The three locations have captured three different formats (I) food court (ii) takeout counter with limited bar seating and (iii) fast casual. All three locations are experiencing double digit growth and the company is actively exploring expansion opportunities.
